What is Sleuth?Sleuth is a computer-based behaviour tracking system that has been successful in contributing to improvements in behaviour management in hundreds of UK schools. Central to the design of Sleuth is the recognition that behavioural observation and recording are a fundamental part of effective behaviour management within any environment. By processing the recorded incident information Sleuth reveal trends and patterns in individual, group and whole school behaviour to help you understand and manage it. The latest version of Sleuth, Sleuth Online, is an online system, hosted and managed by The School Software Company .Com, that runs in a browser on any PC connected to the internet. What is Behaviour Tracking?Behaviour Tracking is the process of collecting and analysing data about behaviour. Data is collected by observing and then recording incidents of behaviour. Analysing recorded behaviour enables thorough investigation of the causes of behaviour so that strategies can be developed to manage it. Why Track Behaviour? There is a fundamental difference between logging behaviour to simply have a record of it for reference and tracking behaviour in order to manage it proactively. Tracking behaviour provides the evidence on which to make decisions and develop strategies to improve behaviour. It then reveals the impact of decisions and strategies so you know what works and what doesn't, good practice can be recognised, re-used and shared. To be most effective behaviour tracking should involve all staff in a whole school approach to behaviour management - all staff track behaviour in order to manage it and apply the school's behaviour policy consistently. Any system used must be straightforward to use with targetted behaviour data accessible to all staff whenever and wherever they need it to support their decision making. Why Use Sleuth to Track Behaviour?
Sleuth is much more than an admin tool used just for the purposes of having a recorded log of behaviour. It is a behaviour management tool that enables you to be proactive about managing behaviour, to identify interventions and monitor their impact. Analysed data should be available and used regularly by all staff to monitor students in their care. Where Sleuth is implemented well it makes a significant difference to how a school manages behaviour. The researchFrom Ofsted's report into Managing Challenging Behaviour (2005): "The most effective pastoral support systems are those in which there is careful and regular tracking of pupils' learning and behaviour." "When information over time is collated well and senior staff act decisively on the analysis of the information, remarkable change can be brought about."
